Sports Focus Training with Light and Sound Stimulation
When the difference between winning and losing could happen faster than the blink of an eye, athletes are always alert for competitive edges. The mental aspect of competitive training has grown exponentially. With sports focus training, the objective is: “Strong mind, strong body, strong performance”. Sports focus training’s ability to show athletes how to access their zone, at will, is very impressive.
One of the pioneers in sports focus training, the late Dr. Rayma Ditson-Sommer, believed “One of the more important goals for peak performance stems from the research reporting that the execution of sports activity involves shutting down the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, allowing the motor cortex to work without interruption. This is a direct result of the knowledge that the right side of the brain is for excellence in performance and the left is for analyzing pre-performance. Therefore, the athlete who continually is thinking about what he or she should be doing is doomed to a less than excellent outcome. By notifying the brain that certain approaches are to be used the need for analysis is nil. The brain can then focus its direct attention to the swimming itself, bypassing the left brain and prefrontal cortex thus adding greatly to the ‘freedom’ of the brain to perform”.  

In 1996, at the Atlanta Olympic games, Dr. Sommer introduced Gary Hall, Jr. to sports focus training using light and sound brainwave stimulation. Gary medaled in Gold. The same method was used again by Dr. Sommer before the Sydney Games where all thirteen Olympians, alumni of her Arizona Training Center, arrived at the Olympic Games ready to train. This competitive edge is created by prior charting of each athlete’s ultradian rhythms, finding the high and low periods, then designating a specific protocol before the low period began. This schedule allowed athletes to function at peak ability whenever necessary regardless of time zones, performance times, rest periods or sleep times, with absolutely no jet lag and prepared to begin final training much sooner than other teams. Including the London and Rio Olympic games, athletes who incorporated brainwave focus training into their workout regime brought home over 50 Gold, Silver and Bronze Olympic medals.

The light and sound stimulation that these athletes use during training actually guides them into targeted brainwave states (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta) with no conscious effort. This is accomplished through what is referred to as entrainment. The mind ‘thinks’ in terms of frequency, our senses transmit electrical impulses to the brain, which in this case uses the favorable senses of vision and hearing. By stimulating the mind with pulsed light and sound, the mind begins to mimic the pulsed stimulation and begins to follow along. This frequency following response of the mind is also what entrainment is. In essence, light and sound stimulation speaks to the mind in it’s own language: frequency.
Light and sound machines contain built-in programs designed for both generic and specific purposes. Multicolored lightframes are recommended over the more common white colored stimulation. Headphones are included, as is an ac adapter, stereo patch cord, carrying case and owners manual.
